BIG IDEA: As we excel in faith, speech, knowledge, earnestness, and love, we must also excel in the grace of giving—out of love for Christ, not compulsion or a fixed percentage.
1) The Macedonian churches, despite severe affliction and extreme poverty, overflowed with joy and generous giving, first giving themselves to the Lord and then to others.
2) Giving is presented as an “act of grace,” not a command or legal requirement; the New Testament does not mandate a 10% tithe.
3) How we view and use money reveals the true state of our hearts toward Jesus (“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”).
4) Genuine love for Christ is proven by cheerful, voluntary generosity; Jesus Himself is the ultimate model—He became poor so that we might become rich.
5) God multiplies what is given in faith: whoever sows sparingly reaps sparingly, but whoever sows bountifully reaps bountifully; He is able to make all grace abound.
6) Giving is not limited to money—time and service offered willingly also express love for Christ and His church.
7) Start where you are (even with a small amount) and give out of love; God desires to entrust His people with more so they can bless others.
